What you will get from this guide

"Shopify Expert" is no longer an official Shopify program. Here is what the terms mean now, how Shopify Partner tiers work, and which role your project needs.

What this guide covers

The business symptom, evidence to collect, Shopify-specific constraints, available options, trade-offs, and the responsible next step.

Who this is for

Established Shopify and Shopify Plus operators who need a clear decision, not generic ecommerce advice.

A Shopify developer is a technical role: someone who writes Liquid, JavaScript, GraphQL and app code. "Shopify Expert" used to be an official Shopify program, but Shopify retired the Shopify Experts brand and marketplace in December 2023 and now organizes agencies and freelancers through Partner Program tiers (Shopify Help Center, Partner Program tiers). Today, "Shopify expert" is a general description, not a credential.

That matters when you hire, because the term no longer tells you anything verifiable on its own.

What the official signals are now

Shopify's Partner Program starts every partner at the Registered tier, with higher tiers named Select, Plus, Premier and Platinum (Shopify Help Center). Partners are listed in the Shopify Partner Directory, where merchants can filter by tier and read reviews on partner profiles.

So the verifiable questions are: is this a Shopify Partner, at what tier, and with what reviews. Not: do they call themselves an expert.

Developer vs agency partner: the real distinction

The useful split is not developer versus expert. It is between someone who writes code and a team that owns an outcome.

A Shopify developer builds what is specified. Ideal when you already know what you need: a section, an app integration, a bug fix, a feature with a clear spec.

A Shopify agency partner typically combines development with strategy, design, QA, SEO, analytics and release management. Ideal when the problem is not yet defined in code terms, such as "conversion dropped after the redesign" or "we need to migrate without losing rankings."

An agency can cover both roles. A single developer usually cannot cover the second.

Two scenarios

You need code. Your team has decided to add a bundle builder to the product page and has the design. A developer, freelance or in-house, is the right hire.

You need a diagnosis and a plan, then code. Revenue per session is falling and nobody knows whether the cause is speed, UX, tracking or traffic mix. You need someone who can investigate across disciplines before writing anything. That is agency or senior-consultant work.

Which one to hire

Hire a developer when the decision is made and the work is specified. Hire an agency partner when the decision itself is part of the work, or when the change touches checkout, data, search or integrations where a mistake is expensive.

Once you know which role you need, use our Shopify expert vetting checklist to evaluate specific candidates. If you need engineering capacity now, start at hire a Shopify developer.

FAQ

Is "Shopify Expert" a certification? Not anymore. Shopify retired the Shopify Experts brand and marketplace in December 2023. Look for Partner tier and Partner Directory reviews instead.

Is a Shopify Partner the same as a Shopify developer? No. A Partner is a business or individual in Shopify's Partner Program. Many Partners are agencies with developers on staff; some are app developers or affiliates.

Can one person be both? Yes, a senior freelancer can diagnose and build. The constraint is capacity and review, not title.
